Hey y’all! First of all, عید شما مبارک!!! Happy New Year! Welcome to the year 1403! I, for one, am extremely happy to be here.
Second, this week was the week: In the spirit of real Nowruz miracles, Cosmopolitan launched the cover of my sophomore novel and ran an exclusive excerpt. What the fuck?! I used to literally spend my allowance buying Cosmo at the corner candy store. This is truly beyond my wildest dreams.
Guys, this cover has been in the works since October. October!!! We pushed back the release date twice, just so we could get it exactly right. Seeing the cover in print, after all of the time and effort (and tears) that so many people poured into it, truly made my eyes well up with tears. Earnest alert!
Another int thing that happened this week: A lot of new Cherry Pickers subscribed to the newsletter. First of all, hey! I’m sooo glad you could make it. This community is my favorite corner of the internet, and I love watching it grow. That said, I caught myself, like, severely overthinking CSOTU this Friday. Usually, I collect anecdotes throughout the week like spare change, saving up until I’ve earned my post. But this time around, I was second-guessing myself. Will the new subscribers find this funny? Does this even make sense? Etc.
DW: I confided in my fiancé, and he immediately set me straight. According to him, y’all are following along because you want to read more of my writing, not a completely different, new, and improved version. Huh! Is that true? Random! Either way, I’m going to do my best to stay true to myself (ew I just gave myself the ick) and “do me.” Lol! Thanks for being here, though. Seriously. It means the world. Here’s the report:
READING: NGL, I had a bit of an icons only reading week.
I started off strong with an ARC of Blue Sisters by Coco Mellors, which follows a group of three sisters as they grieve and process the death of their fourth sister. Y’all, this might be one of my top three reads of the year so far. Not only was the writing beautiful, yet sardonic, but the relationships were so realistic and perfectly captured. I laughed, I ugly-cried. If you have a sister, you need to preorder this book. It’s a must. It hooked me from page one. Don’t forget to check your triggers, though. Especially for substance use disorder. (That said, if I had a nickel for every time I read a book about dead little sisters this month… I’d have two nickels. Which isn’t a lot, but it’s weird that it happened twice. Trauma!)
Next, I read For The Fans by Nyla K, an extremely spicy MM romance about two step-brothers (do not make a porn joke I’m not emotionally equipped to handle it right now) who go from enemies to OnlyFans business partners to lovers. Big TW for SA and religious trauma. Also, like, 800 pages long. But I still found the HEA sweet. Sue me! (That said, if I had a nickel for every time I read a book about OnlyFans creators this month… I’d have two nickels. Which isn’t a lot, but it’s weird that it happened twice.)
Then I read an ARC of The Age Of Magical Overthinking by Amanda Montell.
