Hey y’all! I had a real doozy of a week, and I’ve so been looking forward to debriefing with my friends aka you. Just picture us drinking wine and eating an overpriced charcuterie board while reading this, okay?
I mentioned in an earlier TWR that one of my loved ones is sick, but I haven’t been talking about it all that much, partially because I want to respect her privacy, but also because writing has always been my way of processing my feelings, and I’m not quite ready for this one to feel real yet. By keeping it off-page and in my head, I’ve been delaying the inevitable. Like asking the hard questions. Thinking ahead instead of staying in the present moment and taking it day by day.
Anyway, I bring this all up because she spent the last week in the hospital, so my sister and I did, too. We cozied up to two very nice nurses, Louise and Sarah, critiqued the cafeteria meals like they were from a Michelin-star restaurant, and made the best of a bad deal. She’s back home now, but balancing the pragmatism of care-taking with the emotional excess of watching someone you love suffer can really throw you off-kilter. I’m totally exhausted, but don’t want to admit that because I’m not the one who is sick. You know?
But of course, life goes on. So yesterday, I received the news that I need to say goodbye to my childhood home (and pack up my yearbooks, emo diaries, etc.) in under a week… Sorry to yap, but your girl needs a Gob. Or a BOW. And a hug. Here’s the report:
READING: I didn’t have much time for reading this week, but I did sink my teeth into Kiley Reid’s Come & Get It, after seeing some of my most trusted mutuals raving about it. And y’all, as soon as I was done reading, I started Googling reviews (which I NEVER do) because I needed someone to discuss it with.
This novel follows a middle-aged white writer / visiting professor and a Black senior RA whose lives get intertwined when the former begins paying the latter to let her eavesdrop on her residents (for a column she’s writing for Teen Vogue, no less). I have so many things to say about this book.
